For every 1-MET increase in cardiorespiratory fitness a person can reduce their risk of death by 11-17%, and specifically, their risk of heart disease by 18%.
A met is how much energy you use sitting still.
A simple approach would be to exercise to the point you are slightly out of breath and keep going for 20-30 minutes. Do that 3-4 times a week.
